WUI (Writing under the influence)

Somebody once said we are all Americans, sometimes born in the wrong places.
On a warm autumn day in 1986, while enjoying beer with my college buddies,
I decided to join my new homeland.

I've come to appreciate the ideals that helped create this great country.
Liberalism, political-correctness, multiculturalism and moral equivalence
are destroying it.

Quote of the day 3

"Garrison Keillor refers to Republicans as the “I’ve Got Mine” party. Logically, that would make Democrats the “Give Me Yours” party.

-- Anonymous columnist for the Minneapolis Star Tribune

Quote of the day 2

"[B]ack to the 50-50 divide that marked our politics from 2000-2006. Basically, Republicans can run a stuffed animal against Hillary and still get 48% of the vote."

-- Patrick Ruffini

Quote of the day 1

"The Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC) 1992 defined 'climate change' as changes in climate caused by human interference with atmospheric composition. The task of the IPCC, therefore, has been to accumulate evidence to support this belief that all changes in the climate are caused by human interference with the atmosphere. Studies of natural climate change have largely been used to claim that these are negligible compared with 'climate change.'"

"The IPCC is fundamentally corrupt. The only 'reform' I could envisage would be its abolition."

-- Dr. Vincent Gray, one of the IPCC experts

Speaking of Measure 50 and 49

This letter should appear in tomorrow's paper.

If you want to live in a state where government controls all aspects of your life from where you can build a house, to what you can do with your property, to what car you can drive or whether you are allowed to drive a car at all, and how much of your money really belongs to you, than vote for Measures 49 and 50. If however, like people in Louisiana who just elected their first Republican governor since Reconstruction, you want to live a life free from government interference then vote against those two power-grabbing and rights-eroding measures. After the destruction of Katrina, the liberal press blamed the federal government and President Bush. The people of Louisiana knew better. They watched how liberal policies in their state over decades of uninterrupted Democrat power resulted in corruption, ineptitude, and indifference, and finally decided that it was time to change. The state of Louisiana is now turning Republican defying the conventional wisdom that Democrats really care. Measures 49 and 50 are not about fairness but power, control and social policies worthy only of communist regimes.

3 years later

I'm retiring this picture from the top of my blog and replace it with the most recent one. It's hard to believe it's been only 3 years since I took it.

New
I've started smoking cigars in the meantime. About two years ago, our small group of friends started playing poker. For some reason, playing poker is conducive to smoking cigars. I don't mind because if Measure 50 passes, many of us non-smokers will have to do our share to do something "for the children." And I don't inhale.

Nailing the felt down.

The roof and one wall are ready

Still more siding. I had to go with T&G pine since that was the closest to what's on my garage I could find without blowing my budget. I can only work an hour every other day so this will take until the next weekend.

It was hard to figure out how tall the doors should be. At the end, I decided to make them just high enough for me to enter.

But seriously...

...if Democrats win and (not if but when) the world starts cooling down, people may actually start believing that we caused global warming. This could be bad. As pharaohs who could predict solar eclipses, Democrats could seize the power by exploit natural Sun cycles.

One wonders if pharaohs were the first liberals.

The world can't wait...

...to blame Democrats for everything bad that will happen as of January 2009 (assuming a Democrat gets elected.)

Every day that the air temperature will be higher (if we are still in the "we are causing global warming" stage) or lower (if we are in the "we are causing global cooling" stage) we will blame Clinton (or any other loser Democrats will elect) for it.

Every time somebody's house burns for whatever reason even if he falls asleep with a cigarette in his mouth we will blame Democrats.

Every time the market dips more than 10 points even though it was up 200 points the previous week we will blame Democrats.

In fact, every day that I will wake up and it's raining I will blame Democrats.

Nightmare

The DREAM Act failed today. Too bad. I was hoping I could pass my children for illegal immigrants to get free education for them.

Quote of the day

The demonstration at Teheran University, where President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad gave a speech opening the academic year is] a reminder [...] of just what phonies and blowhards our American "dissenters" are. They know it takes no courage to oppose a democratic government that holds freedom of speech sacrosanct. So they spin lurid fantasies of authoritarianism in order to convince themselves of their own bravery.

-- James Taranto

Shed: week 1

On the first day I was only able to bring these 9 concrete blocks and use them to mark the area where the shed would stand. This at least gave us a general idea of how close the shed would stand to the house (if we were to respect the setback rules) and how big (or small) it could be.

Posted by Picasa

It took some time to place the blocks so they were level and at correct distances from the fence, the house and one another. This process took just a few hours over two days.

Posted by Picasa

Framing the floor was easy. This took just an hour.

Posted by Picasa

One more hour to add 16OC joists.

Posted by Picasa

And another 30 minutes to staple some roof paper. I'm using some old lumber to build the floor. It's not treated so I need the paper to protect it from moisture.

Sometimes this is the easiest way to figure out if I have enough of something and how much more to buy. I need 3 more 8 footers it seems.

Posted by Picasa

It turned out I really only needed 3 8-footers.

The first wall. This one was easy because there were no windows or doors to frame for.

It's raining a lot in these parts this time of year.
